Current Conditions
Right now is the time to be off exploring the small streams that Utah has to offer. Runoff is through and the weather is beautiful.
Expect the usual July hatches. Green Drakes, PMD’s, Yellow Sallies, Golden Stones, Caddis, and Midges. You will also see some Cicadas still flying around. Don’t be afraid to throw hoppers and ants as well.
Enjoy the great weather and great high elevation fishing. Don’t forget to bring mosquito repellant!
Water releases from Rockport Reservoir are at 185 CFS. By Coalville the flows are around 175 CFS. Below Echo the Weber is flowing at 499 CFS. Throughout the I 84 canyon the Weber is quite fishable, but you will encounter tubers throughout the middle of the day. It is flowing at 90 CFS once it gets to Ogden.
Summertime hatches are in full swing. Expect to see midges and caddis in the early morning, PMD’s and Yellow Sallies mid day, and caddis again in the evenings.
For dry flies, I like a film critic PMD in a size 18, a Peacock Caddis in a size 16, and a Yellow Sally in a size 16. Don’t be afraid to try a small hopper or an ant. For nymphs, fish will aways eat a sow bug, try a small gray midge in the morning, Mitchell’s Split Case PMD in a size 18, Iron Sally in a size 16, and a Prince Nymph or other caddis pattern in a size 16.
Streamer fishing is always an option early in the morning or later in the evenings.
Summer is in full swing on the Provo. The flows have come down and the hatches are coming off. Releases from Jordanelle are at 488 CFS. At Charleston the river is flowing at 395 CFS. Below Deer Creek the flows are at 519 CFS. River temperatures are around 50 F. There are a lot of tubers on the Lower Provo so either fish there early in the morning or later in the day. Even though the flows are a lot lower than they were, still be mindful while wading. The current is swift and the rocks are slick.
Summertime hatches are in full swing. Green Drakes are still around on the Middle Provo. You will also see PMD’s, Caddis, and midges. Look for fish sipping on midges and caddis early in the morning and later in the day. During the middle day you will see Green Drakes and PMD’s.
For dry flies I like a peacock caddis in a size 16, film critic PMD in a size 18, Green Drake in a size 12, and a mother shucker in a size 22. For nymphs I’ll generally fish a cased caddis or a prince nymph in a size 16, a Mitchell’s split case PMD in a size 18, a tung teaser Green Drake nymph in a size 12, a bling midge in a size 22, or a sow bug in a size 18.
Streamer fishing is still effective early in the mornings or later in the evenings.
Great news! Flows are coming down and cicadas are around. Dry fly fishing should be getting better and better every day. The current schedule of the ramp down is as follows:
June 17 - At 5 PM flows will decrease to 7,500 CFS
June 18 - At 7 AM flows will decrease to 6,500 CFS
June 19 - At 7 AM flows will increase to 5,500 CFS
June 20 - At 7 AM flows will decrease to 4,500 CFS
June 21 - At 7 AM flows will decrease to 4,000 CFS
June 22 - At 7 AM flows will decrease to 3,500 CFS
June 23 - At 7 AM flows will decrease to 3,000 CFS
June 24 - At 7 AM flows will decrease to 2,500 CFS
June 25 - At 7 AM flows will decrease to 2,000 CFS
June 26 - At 7 AM flows will decrease to 1,500 CFS
River temperatures are around 47 degrees Fahrenheit.
Usually as the flows drop, more and more hatches come off. There are still a good amount of midges in the morning and some caddis and PMD’s are starting to show up later in the day.
As the flows become more consistent, I will update this report again. Until then, enjoy the cicadas.
