Southwest Wyoming Fishing Report

From the Bureau of Reclamation:

As of May 4, 2023, the Fontenelle Reservoir pool elevation is 6475.71 feet, which amounts to 41 percent of live storage capacity. Inflows for the month of April totaled approximately 75,085 acre-feet (af) or 89 percent of average.

Ice along the Green River has thawed, and spring releases have started. Releases from the dam will increase throughout spring to meet elevation targets. Per the May final forecast, maximum total release rates are forecasted to occur in late June at approximately 5,000 cfs, subject to hydrology.

The May final forecast for unregulated inflows into Fontenelle for the next three months projects above average conditions. May, June, and July Most Probable inflow volumes amount to 240,000 af (137 percent of average), 335,000 af (109 percent of average), and 180,000 af (107 percent of average), respectively.

What this means:

Releases from Fontenelle Reservoir are currently at 4,690 CFS. Water temps are around 48.7 degrees Fahrenheit. Snowpack in the Upper Green River Drainage is currently at 87 percent of normal. Snowpack in the Lower Green River Drainage is currently at 122 percent of normal.

Fishing has been slow lately, but as water temperature rises the fishing should begin to pick up.

Provo River Fishing Report

Dam releases below Jordanelle Reservoir are at 1,558 CFS. Flows in Charleston are at 1,490 CFS. Flows below Deer Creek Reservoir are at 902 CFS. Current water temperatures are around 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

Flows are very high below Jordanelle and Deer Creek Reservoirs. Flows going into Jordanelle are over 2,000 CFS. The Middle Provo and Lower Provo are fishable at these levels, but be very careful when wading. Look for fish in the slower moving runs and fish high water bugs like San Juan worms and sow bugs.

Weber River Fishing Report

Releases out of Rockport Reservoir are currently at 405 CFS.

River flows by Coalville are currently at 473 CFS.

Releases out of Echo Reservoir are currently at 93.5 CFS.

River flows by Mountain Green are at approximately 814 CFS.

The Rockport to Echo stretch along I-80 is running high, but is fishable. As you get closer to Coalville the river begins to turn off color due to feeder streams. Flows below Echo Reservoir are lower then they have been, but get pretty big around Mountain Green. Flows going into Rockport Reservoir are still at flood stage.

If you are going to try to fish the Weber, I highly recommend fishing the stretch between Rockport and Echo Reservoirs along I-80. I haven’t heard of any recent reports, but the Mother’s Day Caddis should be going. Plan on having some sow bugs, San Juan worms, prince nymphs, and some other caddis larva with you. You might see some fish rising in the soft water. Have some peacock caddis or the x caddis to cover the risers. If you want to fish streamers, look for fish in the softer pockets.

Small Stream Fishing Report

We had a record snow year here in Utah. There are some smaller tailwaters that are fishing well, but runoff will be a factor for quite some time on all free stone fisheries around the state. Patience is key and be mindful when driving on any dirt road as it might still be quite muddy.
